Methodological Principles for Researching Multilingually: Reflections on Linguistic Ethnography
نویسندگان
چکیده
Linguistic ethnography provides insight into how communication occurs between individuals and institutions, while situating these local actions within wider social, political historical contexts (Copland & Creese, 2015) has proven to be a particularly effective tool for developing our understanding of individuals’ lived multilingual realities (see Unamuno, 2014) societal multilingualism. Turning the ‘reflexive gaze’ that is central (Clifford Marcus, 1986) back onto linguistic itself, we argue where complex interactions are object study, more attention must given multilingualism affects each aspect process actually doing ethnography. In this paper outline development three principles put forward as being essential in conducting contemporary settings. The are: 1) Researching multilingually; 2) collaboratively; 3) responsively.

Researching multilingually: new theoretical and methodological directions
This paper reports findings from an AHRC-funded project into the use of more than one language in research projects. Using 35 seminar presentations and 25 researcher profiles, we investigated how researchers from differing disciplines became aware of the possibilities, complexities, and emerging practices of researching where more than one language is used: for example, in initial research desi...
متن کاملReflections on Researching the Rugged Fitness Landscape
The success of an informing system depends upon achieving a fit between multiple entities: the sender, the client, the delivery system, and the task to be performed. Conceptually, the effectiveness of such informing can be modeled as a fitness landscape—a function that maps the characteristics of the system into a scalar fitness value. The assumed shape of that landscape plays a major role in d...
متن کاملMethodological Approaches for Researching Complex Organizational Phenomena
Organizations face an increasingly turbulent environment requiring flexibility and agility of processes and structures. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the interaction between formal organizational structures and informal networks in fulfilling these needs. A considerable body of evidence about informal collaborative arrangements in organizations exists, pointing to their importance in ac...
متن کاملResearching “construction Client and Innovation”: Methodological Perspective
It is generally accepted that innovation is the implementation of significantly new processes, products or management approaches in order to increase efficiency. Clients or users of products, processes or services are being identified as potential sources of innovation in research conducted in various sectors (e.g. IT, aviation, and laboratory equipment). At present there is concern regarding t...
متن کاملMethodological constraints in researching systems development work
The author describes the problems and constraints experienced when researching an in-house team of system developers working on a groupware project. These constraints partly shaped the approach to field work and led to the need to use multiple methods of data collection. The developers themselves used many ways of coordinating the project which cut across established team structures and culture...
